We as deep
ecologists totally agree with Aldo Leopolo´s essay "The Land Ethic" found
in his 1949 book, The Sand County Almana. Nature does not only provide
us with natural resources, which are part of our daily life needs, but it is a
source of inspiration and beauty that has to be preserved. There is
variety of flora and fauna, different animal and plant species which are not
there for humanity to abuse or make excessive use of them, but also have the
right to live. It is true that there is a very strong relationship between
humans and nature since we are extremely dependant on it and we are designed to
share with it in every way; it sustains our needs, such as providing us with food,
pure water, oil, and trees. The problem is our excessive use of natural
resources and our unawareness of nature´s value although we depend on it. This
unconsciousness of nature´s value, has belittled nature in a way that it
weakens human responsibility regarding their actions, this can be seen in image
1; deforestation is an issue the world is facing due to the excessive
consumption of human beings, the increase on production demand, and
urbanization. These has increased humanity´s level of consumption, and keeps
harming nature in every aspect, since it destroys animal habitats and it
affects communities which do value nature and have a daily life connection with
it, such as the Shuar community in Ecuador, who are excluded from their natural
habitat due to deforestation. On the other hand, in graph 2, we can see how temperature
has increased from 1910 from a temperature of -0.4 until 2010, with a
temperature of 0.6; this reflects there are different human factors that are
affecting the environmental, and meanwhile they cause an increase in temperature
and affect natural processes and organisms by speeding up inconvenient changes
to nature. Also as Aldo Leopolo states in his essay, ethics are a very
important topic regarding nature, since us as humans should become aware of our
actions towards nature, how those affect it and what limits should we put to
ourselves so that nature is respected.
