Cornucopians

After briefly reading the synopsis of Silent Spring by Rachael Carson, we thought that it was terrible the whole issue of the DDT pesticide because it is providing a lot of serious problems not only to the environment but the animals as well. We, as cornucopians, argue that we can solve any problems through politics, technology and scientifically. We are aware that DDT, a pesticide that is a great issue in “Silent Spring”, is killing people and animals and that it is mostly our fault that this is happening. This is a negative public awareness for us, the cornucopians, because DDT is killing animals and consequently affecting the environment. DDT is an economic way to create pesticide, so we as cornucopians can pay to buy something else that could probably be a little bit more expensive but more efficient to the environment. Even though we are the ones who create problems that can affect people, animals and environmental, we are definitely the ones who can cure this as well. We can be the problem but the solution as well. An example that is settled by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 they started creating regulatory actions during the 1950´s and the 1960´s where they will try to prohibit the use of the DDT because of many evidence that shows the damage and toxicological effects of pesticides. “In 1972, EPA issued a cancellation order for DDT based on adverse environmental effects of its use, such as those to wildlife, as well as DDT’s potential human health risks. Since then, studies have continued, and a causal relationship between DDT exposure and reproductive effects is suspected. Today, DDT is classified as a probable human carcinogen by U.S. and international authorities. This classification is based on animal studies in which some animals developed liver tumors.” (United States Environmental Protection Agency). Since 1996 the EPA has been in touch doing international negotiations to keep a control over the use of DDT. They used the United Nations as auspices where the countries get together and get to negotiate to create global bans to stop the large pollution of the earth. This treaty consists of creating a limited exception because of the substance used called DDT and that way get to control mosquitoes which can carry malaria. Also we can see that the United States Environmental Agency states that: “In September 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared its support for the indoor use of DDT in African countries where malaria remains a major health problem, citing that benefits of the pesticide outweigh the health and environmental risks. This is consistent with the Stockholm Convention on POPs, which bans DDT for all uses except for malaria control.”. This two ideas we can see how we as cornucopians are able to control this problem that is taking the world out of control. The EPA also has another organization which works with other countries and agencies by telling them the real role of DDT and how they get to try to control the impact is causing in the earth.
