We as soft ecologists have a vision of nature that’s quite
particular, we believe that nature is our source of life. We require the
resources provided form nature such as food, materials, etc. But we do not believe
that nature should be exploited as it is in the modern world. Our small
communities raise our own cattle, get our own milk our own fruit, in short our
own resources. The current use of technology has had a negative effect on the
environment by increasing certain gas emission that have affected the land
negatively., for example the land is less fertile due to the over use among
other negative consequences.
Looking
at our ancestors we could compare the first European pioneers who came to
America, with the big cities in our modern society, they came with the idea of
development, looking for more resources through which they could develop their
new technologies and expand their believes. They overused resources and took
more than they needed form the land, for example their obsession with gold that
led them to destroy the environment such as forest and pollute rivers, on their
attempt to mine the gold out. They led to what eventually became the industrialization
of the world, which upon our eyes is an abuse of nature and its resources.
On
the other hand we could compare ourselves with the Native Americans. They
maintained their traditions and lived hand by hand with nature. They did not
abuse of it exploiting its resources, they took what they needed. They lived in
harmony with nature. For example river and creeks had a sacred status for the
Cherokee people. For example they had sacred rituals there.
This
connects to us and out convivial with nature and doing as small damage as
possible by taking only what we need. We think that the Native Americans way of
life and relationship with nature was beneficial for nature due to the respect
they had for it. While on the other hand the ambisous view of the pioneers made
them look at nature as a tool and as if they owned it and could do whatever
they want with it, leading to its abuse.
